    Hi Barry,
I do a lot of different types of video production(corporate & live events),but the slight majority is high-end Wedding production(I know). The cameras that I use are Sony DSR-500s shooting in SD 16X9, which are great in low light. I’M looking at HD cameras, mainly the Panasonic hpx500 or the hpx2000. Is the hpx500 better in low light than the hpx2000 and do you know how they would conpare to the sony 500. I’m asking you because I kow you care about these issues and I trust your judgement. thanks

On average, Robin, you’ll find that HD model cameras given the same size imager are about two stops slower in low light than their SD brethren like the Sony DSR-500. The Panasonic HPX500 is the exception to this rule as it employs a pixel offset strategy rather than finer and less sensitive pixels in order to achieve higher resolution. The HPX2000 is in another class altogether and is one of my favorite cameras in low light. It features extremely sophisticated processing that assures low noise and good performance in almost total darkness. The HPX500 processing is similar to the HPX200 and HPX170 cameras, and is therefore rather primitive by comparison. Keep in mind that resolution issues are largely optics related; the quality of a lens being much more readily apparent in HD, especially when projected on a big screen.
